Industry perspective on the uptake of EVs: 2011's interviews at a glance

45 interviews from OEMs, suppliers, service providers, utilities, and battery manufacturers have been published on cars21.com in 2011. Every interviewee has been asked to formulate a 3-point global action plan for the rapid introduction of EVs on the market. Find here the summary of their answers.
cars21.com has conducted 45 interviews in 2011.

All OEMs agree that cost is a current issue for EV uptake. OEMs would like to see more subsidies for EV manufacturers, more incentives (both financial and non-financial) for consumers and the roll-out of a charging infrastructure.

Nissan Europe mentioned education as a key step for EV uptake, because it starts by explaining that electric cars are real cars, and that you can use them on a daily basis, which they see is happening every time they can put somebody in their LEAF. Read the full interview of Nissan Europe here.

Suppliers

Suppliers seem to be the ones who risk the most while waiting for EV uptake. It seems logical as most of them dedicate significant amount of money to develop innovative technologies for sustainable transport such as EVs. Their answers for a global action plan greatly reflect their concerns with regards to their own business development.

Each of them wants to see measures that will favour their technology before others. However, standardised charging infrastructure is something that all suppliers would like to see happen.

Other measures, not wanted by all of them but some, include more collaboration, smart grid development, global public support measures, more revolutionary measures from OEMs’ top management, increasing political pressure, advancements in battery price and capacities, globally shared burden of motorisation.

Battery manufacturers

For battery manufacturers, it is clear that costs need to drop, and part of it will be achieved through more research. The industry also calls for a clear action plan from the policy side, because Stop-and-go policies and investments that fluctuate with short-term funding will not create a sustainable EV eco-system. Finally, public charging infrastructure is said to be a key element for EV uptake.

Utilities

EDF Energy is already very active in low-carbon energy production and electric vehicles. For EDF Energy, consumers’ economics (incentive/penalty), manufacturing capacity and availability of recharging infrastructure will drive EV uptake. Read the full EDF Energy interview here.

It is slightly different for RWE, the German utility, which sees strong and future oriented standards (plug & socket and communication protocol) as the main driver in EV uptake. High-share of EVs in the product portfolio of OEMs, competitive prices and a good share of public, semi-public and private charging points are also seen as key for this uptake. It is always interesting to see industries wanting government handouts. In other words the industry wants to sell itself and allow the bureaucratic zombies to run the EV industries. Once in control these zombies will place all the legislation they can to prevent release of EV\\\'s. I bring you to the performance of GM in the Documentary \\\" Who Killed the Electric Car \\\". 4000 orders and a specially funded department to CONvenience Americans that they do not want and electric car. Destroyed the production line, displaced workers etc. But remember that Ford, Toyota, Nissan all had produced 100% Ev\\\'s for the Californian, US market. Consider the internal combustion vehicle, it has taken 80 years to develop todays vehicles. It would be reasonable to take 10 years to fine tune EV\\\'s. A vehicle body it developed, wiring is developed, braking systems are developed, steering systems are developed, accessories have been developed. So what\\\'s the big deal. Develop a high performance, high voltage, low current motor; example 6000 RPM , 100 000 volt, 1 amp electric motor. This equals 100 000 kW = 134 hp. A simple final drive gear reduction of 4:1 which would produce 1500 wheel revolutions/min. Aprrox. 100 MPH cruising speed. Come on, A electronic control unit ( off the shelf computer ) and batteries to suit. Build in to the body solar cells to provide voltage support to the batteries. By changing battery capacity ie from 1amp/ hr discharge to 3,5or even 10 amp/ hr discharge you have automatically increased driving range. Let the owners select what range they want to purchase. I do get sick and tied of the merry-go-round that EV industry has allowed to develop and not just release what is available at a sensible price and not one selected by the government zombies.
