The 90th edition of the Brussels Auto Salon is held in the 100,000m2 of the Brussels Expo (Heysel) from 12 to 22 January 2012. EVs are clearly in the focus, being displayed on the front stage of nearly each stand. In addition, the Cleaner Mobility Exhibition is being held, offering the possibility to test-drive 25 EVs. +PHOTOS

No world or European premiere in the EV field has been announced, however the Brussels Auto Salon has never before put so much focus on electric vehicles (EVs). All major OEMs and some small manufacturers have EVs displayed. Moreover, EVs are most of the time given more space on stands than other cars. Read on to find out which ones are already or soon-to-be available, which ones are concepts, which ones are available for a test drive and which ones have won Clean Car of the Year 2012 awards.

Cleaner Mobility

This year, an exhibition has been dedicated to Cleaner Mobility in Hall 7 of the Show. Not only are vehicles displayed, but also charging solutions. ThePluginCompany and Schneider Electric display their whole range of charging poles, from the wall charger you can find in your garage to the fast-charging station designed to be on highways. Their products also take into account the whole range of charging solutions that will be needed on public space in urban areas.

ZenCar is displaying its mobility solution: Electric car sharing, with a network of Tazzari Zero electric cars and reserved parking places with charging poles in key locations in Brussels.

In addition, OEMs have made 25 of their EVs available for test-drive, including: Mitsubishi i-MieV, Peugeot iOn, Citroën C-Zero, Nissan Leaf, Opel Ampera, Chevrolet Volt, Renault Fluence, Renault Twizy, Mercedes SMART Electric Drive, Mercedes-Benz Class-A E-CELL, Volvo C30, VolksWagen e-Motion, BMW ActiveE…

The test-drive track is outdoors, giving drivers more space to accelerate and also try the regenerative breaking, providing them with a good electric vehicle driving experience.

Clean Car of the Year 2012

Organised for the second time by VAB, the largest Flemish Automobile Association, awards have been given in three different categories:

  • Clean Car of the Year 2012: Chevrolet Volt
  • Clean Fleet Car of the Year 2012: Opel Ampera
  • Clean City Car of the Year 2012: Mitsubishi iMieV

Your report on the CLEANER MOBILITY is interEsting but your journalist has missed several companies: NEWTEON & GREEN WACO. You can discover the commercial vehicles on the net. Thank you for your attention Robert COURTOIS

Dear Robert, Thank you for your comment. I was the journalist visiting and reporting from the AutoSalon. Some of the EVs at the AutoSalon are indeed not mentioned in the article, such as NEWTEON and GREEN WACO, and also Segway, and some electric bikes and electric scooters manufacturers. However, this is a pity that the Estrima was not on the test-drive track, which was the main focus of the Cleaner Mobility exhibition.
