Electric Car Batteries Just Hit A Key Price Point http://cars21.com/news/view/5883 http://cars21.com/news/view/5883 2015-04-14 09:38:02 article
Electric vehicle demand in the past five years has soared in the US. The same is true worldwide. By the end of 2014, more than 700,000 total plug-in vehicles had been sold worldwide (plug-in hybrids and pure battery electrics), up from about 400,000 at the end of 2013. As of 2015, dozens of models of electric cars and vans are available for purchase, mostly in Europe, the United States, Japan, and China.

A major reason for the rapid jump in EV sales is the rapid drop in the cost of their key component -– batteries. The energy stored in a battery is measured by kilowatt-hour (kWh). The more kWh stored, the further the car can go on one charge, so a key metric for battery economics is the cost per kWh. The lower the cost, the cheaper it is to build an electric car with a significant range.
New steering system proposed to increase electric-car efficiency http://cars21.com/news/view/5882 http://cars21.com/news/view/5882 2015-04-08 12:55:39 article The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany and automotive supplier Schaeffler are working to develop a new type of steering system specifically for electric cars that could improve their efficiency.

As with most internal-combustion cars, electric cars use a power assist to decrease steering effort. This draws electricity from a car’s battery pack, affecting range, the two partners note. KIT and Schaeffler propose a system that does away with the standard apparatus of a steering column linked to the wheels by tie rods. Instead, the prototype system uses individual electric motors for each of the front wheels to steer. The second-generation 2016 Volt will also be shown Monday at the North American International Auto Show here. How Georgia became the biggest electric vehicle market in the U.S. http://cars21.com/news/view/5870 http://cars21.com/news/view/5870 2015-01-14 11:39:31 article During the last year, sales grew more than sevenfold in the southeastern state, with electric cars accounting for one of every 60 new cars sold, according to data firm Statista. That’s a higher percentage than the second-largest market, California, where the figure was one in 70.

Price, of course, is a key factor. Brian Brockman, corporate communications senior manager for Nissan, says Georgia’s $5,000 (€4243) tax incentive, when coupled with a federal incentive of up to $7,500 (€6364), has been a key factor to the state’s electric vehicle growth. (The state incentive will likely meet challenges in the 2015 state legislature.)

Another important incentive is the fact electric vehicle owners get access to high-occupancy-vehicle lanes, called carpool lanes. This can make the difference between arriving on time or frustratingly late in the gridlocked capital of the New South, and is an example of the sort of alluring non-economic incentive that other sustainable industries could seek to adopt. Mercedes Unveils Self-Driving, Pollution-Free Car At CES 2015 http://cars21.com/news/view/5868 http://cars21.com/news/view/5868 2015-01-12 10:53:51 article Dubbed the Mercedes-Benz F015 Luxury in Motion, this automobile is fully autonomous and produces no carbon emissions whatsoever, said Dieter Zetsch, head of the German company. It is powered by a battery and a fuel cell that produces electricity by combining hydrogen with oxygen to create water. When these two gases combine, they release energy that can be harnessed. Challenges in the past have involved safely storing hydrogen, which is combustible, especially under pressure. But this car houses the gas in super-strong cylinders placed between the wheels, where they are unlikely to be damaged even in a bad accident, said Ralf Herrtwich, a senior engineer with the company. The car can travel about 200 kilometers (125 miles) on the power of its batteries, which are charged by being plugged in. Once these are spent, the hydrogen fuel cell is activated, which can provide power to drive another 900 km (550 miles), Herrtwich said. Electrical grid: grid benefits from electric vehicles http://cars21.com/news/view/5866 http://cars21.com/news/view/5866 2015-01-09 10:02:24 article Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and automaker BMW are teaming up to test the ability of electric vehicle batteries to provide valuable services to the electric grid. If successful, the pilot program could pave the way for significant utility payments that could stimulate further customer purchases of electric vehicles.

Demand response programs can save money by delaying the need to upgrade power lines, transformers and other equipment to handle infrequent peaks in demand. They can reduce the need to buy expensive and polluting fossil-fueled power to meet such spikes in demand. And, with further refinement, they may help utilities manage and smooth out the intermittent flow of energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar generation.
Gogoro ignites smart city transformation with launch of world's first smartscooter and battery swapping infrastructure http://cars21.com/news/view/5865 http://cars21.com/news/view/5865 2015-01-07 12:08:07 article Gogoro, a company transforming how energy is distributed and managed in megacities, today unveiled the world's first high-performance, zero emissions, two-wheeled electric vehicle, the Gogoro Smartscooter™.
